JFT syllabus: what should you study?
JFT-Basic checks everyday Japanese through four sections: Script and Vocabulary, Conversation and Expression, Listening Comprehension, and Reading Comprehension. Expect about 50 questions in 60 minutes.

Turn each section into a practice task
Use this study checklist alongside the official question categories. The examples below are preparation suggestions, not a prediction of your exam questions.
- Script and Vocabulary: connect a word or kanji with meaning, reading and a useful sentence.
- Conversation and Expression: choose a reply that matches the situation and the relationship between speakers.
- Listening: identify a changed plan, requested action or key detail without reading a transcript first.
- Reading: find a condition, time or instruction in a message, notice or schedule.
Know the screen rules before exam day
Sections share the test time. After leaving a section you cannot return. Listening questions cannot be revisited, and audio can be played up to twice. Practise those controls before a timed attempt so navigation does not distract you.
JFT pass marks and assessment levels from August 2026
The official score range is 10–250. Since August 2026, the reported bands are A1: 145–174; A2.1: 175–199; and A2.2 (A2): 200–250. Below 145, no level is reported. When learners say “JFT pass marks”, they often mean the 200-point A2 threshold.
These are scaled scores, not the number of correct answers. Do not convert an app percentage into an official result or assume a lower level meets the requirement for your particular application.
Build a balanced weekly revision plan
Begin with an untimed set to find gaps. Alternate listening and reading days, and keep a short daily vocabulary review. At the end of the week, take one uninterrupted mock and use its mistakes to choose the following week’s topics.
If you finish quickly but make context errors, slow down and explain each choice. If you understand the material but run out of time, practise short timed blocks before another full mock. No single fixed chapter list guarantees the questions you will receive.

Frequently asked questions
Does JFT have a separate speaking interview?
The JFT-Basic test uses the four computer-based sections described here. It is not a spoken interview. Speaking practice still helps you build usable Japanese.
Can I use JLPT N5 as the JFT syllabus?
No. N5 is a different exam level. Some foundations overlap, but use JFT sample formats and everyday communication tasks for JFT preparation.
Does 80% in a mock guarantee 200 in JFT?
No. Official scores are scaled statistically. Use a mock score to find weak areas, not to predict a guaranteed result.
